Olympic Torch on Snowdon
The Olympic Torch will be lit by Sir Chris Bonnington on the summit of Snowdon on Tuesday 29th May at 10.00 a.m.
Snowdon Mountain Railway is proud to be transporting the flame, by steam train, to the summit and be one of ‘The Alternative Methods of Transport’ that the flame will travel on. As the flame is transported by lantern to it’s destination these events are classed by the Olympic Committee as not necessarily a public event, but anyone fortunate enough to be on the top of Snowdon early Tuesday morning will be able to watch the torch being lit for an 8 minute media photographic opportunity. The BBC will also be broadcasting live from the summit throughout the day. As the Olympic Flame travels with a large entourage and Snowdon Mountain Railway has limited capacity and single line operation, the early morning trains will be unable to carry passengers to the summit in time for the event although all trains from mid morning will be running as normal.
