Snowdon marks new peak for lager production
Saturday (23rd July) marked not only the 36th International Snowdon Race but also the introduction of a refreshing new tipple- 1085 Snowdon’s Lager.
Created by the award winning Great Orme Brewery, based locally in Llandudno, 1085 is now on sale at both retail and catering outlets at Snowdon Mountain Railway including the summit of Snowdon at Hafod Eryri.
The brand new brew, made from soft Snowdonia water, is a labour of love for brewer Johnathan Hughes who developed the beer to take adavantage of the water that feeds his Glan Conwy microbrewey. Great Orme, whose Celtica beer was voted CAMRA Champion Golden Ale of Wales 2010, hope to spread a resurgence in quality production in North Wales, with their latest offering being no exception.
Early sales of 1085, named after the height of Snowdon, have been promising, however Hughes is hoping that visitors to Wales’ most famous landmark will take a few bottles home and spread the word.
“Since setting up Great Orme Brewery in 2005, it has been an ambition of mine to produce lager here. There has been a huge resurgence in real ales because people recognise the quality and variety of beers available. I feel the time is right for a lager that breaks the mould, brewed using the same standards of quality and flavour customers have come to expect of real ales.”
