Summit Opening 18th April (subject to weather conditions)
For only the third time since 1950, the Snowdon Summit Visitor Centre, Hafod Eryri, will be opening for the Easter holidays (subject to weather conditions). Normally, heavy snow and ice will prevent rail travel to the Summit until May. However, the Summit of Snowdon has been relatively free of snow since Christmas and commissioning of the building has begun.
The work on commissioning the Summit building is an epic task. The extra large generators need to be assembled in one of the highest buildings in the UK. Once power is available, tanks can be filled with the 20,000 litres of water, needed to run and heat the building & also with 5,000 litres of oil that is needed to run the generators each week – all of these commodities are transported using the railway.
When de-commissioning the building in November 2010, all of the plumbing fixtures were disassembled and drained to prevent water freezing in the building – these now need to be re-assembled before running the heating & plumbing systems. All shutters and electrics must be commissioned as they were 'winterised' to withstand freezing temperatures as low as -25 degrees centigrade. Finally, the building will be deep cleaned and stocked ready for the first customers on the 18th April!
