Marking the Generations

Sian - Gt Gt Grand-daughter of Thomas Williams

Snowdon Mountain Railway is one of the oldest active operational companies in North Wales and, as such, is very proud of its history and its close association with the local community. Recently a window into the past was opened when we employed one of the 5th generation of a local family at Llanberis. Sian is the Great Great Granddaughter of one of our first Steam Locomotive drivers, Thomas Williams, who drove on the Snowdon Mountain Railway from its inception in 1896 until retirement many years later. Sian represents the 5th generation of the Ellis Family, many of whom have worked for the railway in some capacity over the years. Indeed her grandfather, Tony Ellis, had an unblemished 47 year continuous service record, starting out as a fresh faced 15 year old working on the track, and retiring only relatively recently. Present General Manager, Alan Kendall said : “The wonderful service that the Ellis family continue to give Snowdon Mountain Railway is testament to the loyalty of our staff and the wonderful support the railway has always enjoyed from the local community “.
