An Illustrated History of the Snowdon Mountain Railway

Despite its popularity with visitors, the Snowdon Mountain Railways fascinating history has received little attention from historians. With the first detailed examination of the railway for more than 30 years Peter Johnson has put that right. The author of successful books on the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways, Peter is well placed explore the nooks and crannies that hide the secrets of the railway's past. What really happened on that fateful day in 1896 when a locomotive was destroyed? Why do the trains only have one carriage? What is the connection with the politician David Lloyd George? How much did the old Summit building cost to build? When did the trains first run on Sundays? How were the diesel locomotives paid for? The answers to these questions and many more are all here. Peter Johnson's book tells our story in a highly readable style with the accompaniment of dozens of illustrations and photographs, many of them reproduced in colour.
