Journey to the rooftop of Wales

Since 1896 visitors have been travelling to Llanberis, to experience the unique rail journey to the Summit of the highest mountain in Wales and England. Claim this mountain peak, the highest in Wales, as a lifetime’s achievement. Come with us and see exactly why Snowdon Mountain Railway has been described as one of the most unique and wonderful railway journeys in the world. With stunning scenery and awe-inspiring views it’s all part of a great day out for you and your family in North Wales. Your adventure starts here!

There are two services are available: heritage steam and traditional diesel.

The Heritage Steam Experience on the “Snowdon Lily” and “The Mountain Goat”

Pushed by an original steam locomotive from 1896, the carriages on our steam service are accurate re-constructions of the carriages of 1896.

Today’s visitor can enjoy the original Victorian experience as they journey to the Summit of Snowdon. We have three departures daily from May to the end of September and pre-booking is advised. The return journey takes two and a half hours including a 30 minute stop- over at the Summit.

The Traditional Diesel Service

Our new passenger carriages for our diesel locos came in to service in 2013 and ensure that visitors to North Wales will continue to enjoy the unique Snowdon Mountain Railway experience for many years to come.

Trains leave Llanberis station daily from mid-March until the end of October every 30 minutes from 9am subject to passenger demand and weather conditions.

In March and April the normal destination is not the summit but Clogwyn which is the 3/4 point on the mountain. The journey time to Clogwyn is approximately 45 minutes and passengers have a 30 minute stop-over at this unsheltered station. There are no facilities at Clogwyn or on board the trains.

From May onwards our usual destination is Hafod Eryri Visitor Centre at the Summit of Snowdon .The return journey takes two and a half hours including a 30 minute stop-over at the summit.

Opening times

Advanced sales can be made online or by telephone ( each booking is subject to £3.50 administration charge ). We recommend customers arrive 30 minutes prior to travel to collect pre-booked tickets.
